WordPress.com Unleashes AI Power for Site Management with MCP
WordPress.com has introduced support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to enable large language models (LLMs) like Claude or ChatGPT to securely access context from applications. This innovation addresses the time-consuming manual process of managing WordPress sites, which typically involves logging into dashboards, checking stats, and monitoring updates. With MCP, users can now directly ask their AI assistants questions about their WordPress.com sites and receive instant, data-driven answers without leaving their AI tool.
MCP bridges the gap where AI assistants could brainstorm but lacked direct access to real-time site data such as post performance, traffic trends, or active plugins. WordPress.com is the first host to natively support MCP with OAuth, making all paid plans MCP-ready. This integration offers significant benefits: faster workflows by eliminating manual logins and clicks; seamless integration of site content, data, and insights directly within the AI environment; and a secure-by-design approach, ensuring safe access with nothing stored locally and complete user control to connect or disconnect at any time.
Currently, MCP provides “read-only” access, allowing AI assistants to securely surface information and insights. Future updates will introduce “write” access, expanding AI capabilities. Getting started involves enabling MCP on a WordPress.com account, configuring the AI application (e.g., Claude Desktop, Cursor), and authenticating via OAuth.
Specific examples highlight MCP's utility: users can ask, “How did my latest post perform?” for instant traffic insights; request a “comprehensive health check across all my WordPress.com sites” to get a prioritized action plan for storage, performance, or content freshness; or “summarize recent comments across all my sites” to quickly understand reader engagement. This integration transforms site management into a faster, more focused, and secure experience, leveraging AI where users already work.
